Baby Echo guide

How to find your baby's heartbeat

First trimester

Where to place the probe

12 – 24 weeks

low on abdomen
Start very lowPlace the probe just above the pubic hairline. The uterus is still low in the pelvis at this stage.
Move slowlyGlide the probe gently side to side. Don't lift — keep it flat on the skin.
Use plenty of gelAir gaps cause static. Apply a generous layer before starting.
Second trimester

Where to place the probe

24 – 32 weeks

around the navel
Move up and outThe uterus has risen — try around and just below the navel, slightly to either side.
Try after a mealBabies are often more active after you eat. Wait 20 minutes for better results.
Lie flat with a full bladderA slightly full bladder lifts the uterus and makes the heartbeat easier to find.
Third trimester

Where to place the probe

32 – 40 weeks

above the navel
Search higher upThe uterus is now above the navel. Try the upper sides of the abdomen.
Follow baby's positionTry the opposite side if you can't find it — baby has a preferred position now.
Be patientBaby may be hiding behind the placenta. It can take a few minutes — that's normal.
What you're listening for

Reading the heartbeat

Normal range at all stages

120–160BPM — normal
<120 or >160BPM — call your midwife

A healthy fetal heart beats fast — much faster than an adult's. The rhythmic "whoosh-whoosh" is what you're looking for. Your own heartbeat sounds slower and more like a dull thud.

Baby heartbeatFast, rhythmic whooshing — 120 to 160 BPM. Think galloping horse.
Your heartbeatSlower, duller — around 60 to 100 BPM. Move the probe and try again.
Not a medical deviceIf you're worried at any point, always contact your healthcare provider.

FAQs

What does a baby's heartbeat actually sound like on a doppler?

It's fast, rhythmic, and unlike anything you've ever heard. A healthy fetal heart rate is typically between 120–160 beats per minute — much faster than an adult heartbeat. Some say it sounds like a tiny galloping horse

How early in my pregnancy can I use this?

Most mamas are able to pick up a clear heartbeat from around 12 weeks onwards. Before 12 weeks it can be very difficult to detect, not because anything is wrong, but simply because baby is still very tiny and deep in the pelvis. We recommend waiting until at least 12 weeks to avoid any unnecessary worry from not finding it early on. Every pregnancy is different — some mamas find it easily at 12 weeks, others closer to 16. Both are completely normal.

Is it safe for my baby?

Fetal dopplers use the same non-invasive ultrasound technology your OB uses at every single prenatal appointment

What if I can't find the heartbeat and panic more?

This is the most common fear — and it's valid. Not finding it immediately doesn't mean anything is wrong — it usually just means baby has wiggled. we always recommend calling your midwife if the worry doesn't ease.
